Footwear

Children's feet change and develop as they grow. Prior to 18 months of age, children's feet will probably grow more than one-half a shoe size every 2 months; one-half every 3 months for a toddler. This rate of growth will diminish once they reach the age of 3, about 1 shoe size every year. Footwear will help protect their feet from injury, heat and cold. When a toddler starts walking, it is important that they have bare feet or soft-soled shoes. This helps them feel what they touch with their feet and, at the same time, aids in muscle development and strengthens their ability to receive sensory information from the soles of their feet.

Once they start walking with more confidence, they can progress to a firmer soled shoe. When they're older, they will need shoes that are appropriate for the activity ahead of them and, of course, the weather. We offer a wide selection to choose from at TJ's, covering the different stages of development your child may be at.
